Fast & Easy Quilt Blocks Video Series

Do you like learning new quilt blocks that are easy to make and great for scrap busting? You can with my YouTube Series – Fast & Easy Quilt Blocks. Every few weeks I present a new quilt block that is great for scrap busting and is easy to put together. This is block number 10!

These video tutorials are a little bit different than many of my others. The main difference is that there is no speaking in them, only music. I give all of the measurements on screen and the tempo is faster. I always do an accompanying blog post with them so viewers can refer bak to the measurements and layout ideas.

Tips

General quilting supplies are needed to make this block. A scant 1/4″ seam allowance is used.

What to Cut to Make One 14″ Finished Block

I have put the total number of pieces. Cut pieces from your favorite fabrics. Tip: You could sketch the block and color it in with various colors.

Cutting Requirements

Note: I use the 8 at a time method to make the half square triangles in this block. They are made using the 5 3/4″ squares.

Pieces Needed:

  • Fabric 1:
  • A – 1 square – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
  • Fabric 2:
  • B – 4 strips – 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″
  • Fabric 3:
  • C* – 1 strip – 2 1/2″ x 10 1/4″
  • Fabric 4:
  • D* – 1 strip – 2 1/2″ x 10 1/4″
  • E* – 1 square – 5 3/4″ x 5 3/4″
  • Fabric 5:
  • F* – 1 square – 5 3/4″ x 5 3/4″
  • G – 12 squares – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
  • H* – 2 strips – 2 1/2″ x 10 1/4″

* Block Layout

*Below is the layout. Please note that the pieces with stars next to them are formed using larger pieces of fabric. For example, the eight E/F half square triangles are made using the piece E and the piece F.

Possible Layouts and Color Ideas

It is always fun trying out different colors and layouts with my Electric Quilt 8 software. These are all made with the same number of blocks. Look at all of the different results.

First I went with a lighter look which showed off the sashing. Second I went with a bolder flower look and boy do they pop! Third I went with a scrappy layout. Lastly I set the blocks on point for a great look. I think this one is my favorite this time around.
