Quilt Block Patterns Quilting

October Monthly Color Challenge for the Patterns by Jen 2020 Event

Fall is here and so is the October monthly color challenge block for the Patterns by Jen 2020 event. This month’s color is all about olive which is perfect for October. It’s not a color that I have a lot of, but I was able to find some good pieces. I guess I need to go fabric shopping!

Check out all of the sawtooth stars in the block. They make it really sparkle. I will admit, this block took a bit more time to assemble and it has my most dreaded unit, the flying geese.

As much as I complain about the flying geese, it’s a great unit that is an essential part of many blocks. And since I no longer try to avoid making them, they aren’t as hard for me as they used to be.

I am primarily a scrap quilter so I’m always looking for blocks to add to my collection of ones that would look good with scraps. This pattern is definitely going onto that list.

When this quilt along first started, I had a favorite block picked out. I think this one may have bumped the other one out of first place. Of course, there are still two months to go, so I may still change my mind.

Along with the block done entirely in the color of the month, this year Jen added the option of doing one either with a white or black background. I chose the white and I am loving the way it pops. I can’t wait to put the whole thing together!

I will say that using the white background has its challenges. It’s unforgiving so you really have to watch your sewing.
