How to Make a Sparkly Paws Quilt Block

It’s time for another easy quilt block tutorial. This is episode #17 of Fast & Easy Quilt Blocks, a series on my YouTube channel, and it is a great big block this time. The blocks in this series are so to make and this one is no exception. Measurements and instructions are all shown on the video. However, you can also find the measurements in this blog post. I call this one Sparkly Paws because it has so many half square triangles and it is similar to the traditional Bears Paw block. Grab your supplies and let’s learn how to make a Sparkly Paws quilt block.

This block is a nice 14 1/2″ unfinished size block.

Tips

General quilting supplies are needed to make this block. A scant 1/4″ seam allowance is used.

What to Cut to Make One 14″ Finished Block

I have put the total number of pieces. Cut pieces from your favorite fabrics. Tip: You could sketch the block and color it in with various colors.

Pieces Needed:

Purple Fabric:
A – 2 squares cut 6 1/4″ x 6 1/4″ (for making the half square triangles 8-at-a-time)
B – 2 squares cut 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ (for making the half square triangles 2-at-a-time)
Beige Fabric:
C – 2 squares cut 6 1/4″ x 6 1/4″ (for making the half square triangles 8-at-a-time)
D – 2 squares cut 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ (for making the half square triangles 2-at-a-time)
E – 1 square cut 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
Green Fabric:
F – 4 strips cut 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″
G – 4 squares cut 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

Possible Quilt Layouts and Color Ideas

It is always fun trying out different color combinations and block placements with my Electric Quilt 8 software. These are all made with the same number of blocks. Look at all of the different results.

First I went with one that was similar to my actual block. The second one is a striking combination of red, white and black. Scrappy was the way I went for the third look and finally I went with a holiday look and the blocks are set on point.
