How to Make a Galaxy Quilt Block
Get out your scrap fabric bins. It’s time for another easy quilt block tutorial. This is episode #16 of Fast & Easy Quilt Blocks, a series on my YouTube channel. These are such easy blocks to make and this one is no exception. Measurements and instructions are all shown on the video. However, you can also find the measurements in this blog post. Let’s learn how to make a galaxy quilt block.
This block is fun and easy to make and it is a terrific scrap buster. If you know me, you know I love a good scrappy quilt. Make sure you check out my “Fast & Easy Quilt Blocks” series over on my YouTube channel for more fun blocks.
Video Highlight: You will learn how to make 2 1/2″ half square triangles using the 2-at-a-time method. This is a great skills to have.

Tips
General quilting supplies are needed to make this block. A scant 1/4″ seam allowance is used.
What to Cut to Make One 9″ Finished Block
I have put the total number of pieces. Cut pieces from your favorite fabrics. Tip: You could sketch the block and color it in with various colors.
Pieces Needed:
- Fabric 1:
- A – 2 squares cut 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″
- B – 1 square cut 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
- Fabric 2:
- C – 2 squares cut 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″
- D – 4 strips cut 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
- Fabric 3:
- E – 4 strips cut 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
- F – 4 strips cut 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
- Fabric 4:
- G – 4 strips cut 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″

Possible Quilt Layouts and Color Ideas
It is always fun trying out different color combinations and block placements with my Electric Quilt 8 software. These are all made with the same number of blocks. Look at all of the different results.




First I went with some fall colors. The second one is nice and scrappy, using darks and lights to give it a bit of sparkle. I decided to go with pastels for the third look and finally I went with a holiday scheme and the blocks are set on point.
