How to Recolor the Cups and Saucers Quilt Block to Make it Look Like a Flower

Every once in a while I like to do a quick quilt block video tutorial. The only sound they have is some cute music and they are slightly sped up. Basically you can learn a new block in about 10 minutes. This one is no exception. We are learning how to recolor the Cups and Saucers quilt block to make it look like a flower. It’s amazing how a slight color change in a block can make a whole different look. This is the 14th block in my Fasts & Easy Quilt Blocks series. They are all fun and easy to make. In this video you will learn how to make 2 1/2″ half square triangles using the 2-at-a-time method and the flying geese 4-at-a-time method. These are great skills to have.

This blocks is a nice large one (12 1/2″ unfinished) block, and with the different coloration, it looks like a flower. Here’s how to make it. Measurements can be found a bit further down in this post.

General quilting supplies are needed to make this block. A scant 1/4″ seam allowance is used.

What to Cut to Make One 12″ Finished Block

I have put the total number of pieces. Cut pieces from your favorite fabrics. Tip: You could sketch the block and color it in with various colors.

Pieces Needed:

  • Fabric 1:
  • A – 2 squares cut 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″
  • Fabric 2:
  • B – 2 squares cut 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″
  • C – 4 squares cut 3 1/8″ x 3 1/8″
  • Fabric 3:
  • D – 1 square cut 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
  • E – 4 squares cut 3 1/8″ x 3 1/8″
  • Fabric 4:
  • F – 1 square cut 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″
  • Fabric 5:
  • I – 4 squares cut 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

Possible Quilt Layouts and Color Ideas

It is always fun trying out different color combinations and block placements with my Electric Quilt 8 software. These are all made with the same number of blocks. Look at all of the different results.

First I went with colors similar to the version I made in the video. The second one is all about purples. Third I went with a scrappy layout. Lastly I set the blocks on point for a great look. I love how completely different the on-point one looks compared to the others.
