Benartex Sawtooth Star Charity Quilt

One of the projects that we do as Benartex Sewcial Stars is for charity. I love doing quilts like this. The charity can use it to either make funds by raffling a quilt off or give it to someone in need. I decided to make a quilt for the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They have received quilts of mine in the past for their annual auctions and their residents.

Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation does a wonderful job with seniors. From residential life to outreach programs they have been so helpful to my family as well as so many others.  As their mission statement says: “Our mission is to continually transform and elevate health, wellness, and social services while fostering an Abundant Life® for those we serve and those who serve.”  They do a great job meeting that mission.

The Fabric

The real star of this quilt is the fabric. The colors and subtle pattern of them just makes this quilt shine.

For the stars I used all of the gorgeous colors in the fabric line. I set the blocks off with a background of the light beige. That really made those rich colors shine. Equinox is one of the lines in Benartex’s Better Basics collection.

The Quilt

For this quilt I went with an easy Sawtooth Star block pattern and some sashing and cornerstones. It’s a traditional design that I believe will fit in perfectly with the retirement home. The quilt measures 58″ x 72″ which makes it an ideal throw size. The star blocks measure 12 1/2″ unfinished and the sashing is 2 1/2″ (unfinished) wide. The cornerstones add an extra punch of color.

I mixed and matched the fabrics to give the quilt a scrappy look. As a result, I think the quilt really sparkles. Once it is quilted it will be on its way to the Lutheran SeniorLife Foundation.
