Patriotic Star Mini Wall Quilt
Every month the Island Batik ambassadors have a project to make. This month was all about holiday celebrations. The rest was up to us. We could design something for any holiday using any of the Island Batik fabrics. I was lucky enough to receive a bundle of half yard cuts of their new Red, White and Blooms fabric in November and that inspired my project. This fabric is a signature line designed by Kathy Engle for Sarah Fabian of Quilt Basket. Filled with rich colors, it was ideal for my patriotic star mini wall quilt.
This little quilt was easy to put together and I had lots of fun machine quilting around the stars to add a little extra interest. The stars are all paper pieced and each one is made in one of the fabrics in the new fabric line. I call this a wall quilt, but it can easily be a table topper.
Disclosure: Items used in this post were generously provided by Island Batik, Hobbs Batting, Aurifil Thread and Schmetz Needles
I designed my quilt in Electric Quilt 8 (EQ8) and the stars are paper pieced using a star block pattern I found in EQ8. I sized the block down and as a result, they are about the size of a quarter.
What I Used to Make My Patriotic Star Mini Quilt
Fabric: The stars, backing, binding and the inner border were all made using fabrics from the Red, White & Blooms line. Also, the white background is Coconut, from Island Batik’s foundation line.
Thread: I used Aurifil’s Dove Gray to piece the quilt and outline some of the stars. In addition, I used Aurifil’s red and Aurifil’s medium blue to outline some of the stars.
Batting: I wanted a little extra loft for this piece so I used Hobbs Poly-Fill. Perfect!
Needles: You can almost always find Schmetz Microtex 80/12 in my Janome MC 6600. they are definitely my go-to needle.
This little patriotic star mini wall quilt will definitely be on display in my house throughout the summer months. It’s an ideal celebratory piece. Ask for Red, White and Blooms at your local quilt shop or at one of the following stores.
