How to Make a 36″ Floor Pillow

When I was a kid my dad made me a loft bed and underneath it I had a big floor pillow. I really miss that pillow and I decided that I would make one for myself. This project is so easy to make it will surprise you. You don’t need many supplies either, just some cute fabric. In 2026 I am a Benartex brand ambassador and I chose this adorable fabric line for this tutorial. It is called Prairie Chicks and it is designed by Cheryl Haynes. Wait until you see the closeups of the different patterns in this fabric line. Let’s make a floor pillow!

Not only do I have this tutorial, but I did a video as well. You can see it here.

What You’ll Need

  • One 36″ pillow form. I got mine at Amazon here.
  • 81 – 5″ fabric squares. I used a pack of 10″ precuts and cut them down. Look at those adorable chickens in the Prairie Chicks line!
  • 1 1/4 yards of fabric cut into two pieces that are 21 1/2″ x 37″. This is for the back of the pillow.
  • General sewing supplies

*Important Sewing Note*

Because this is a floor pillow I used a twin needle. It gives some added strength to the seams. You can do this, you can use a zigzag stitch or you can use a regular stitch. It is up to you. Because the top gets trimmed down to 37″ square you don’t need to worry too much about the seam allowance. Just don’t use a seam allowance larger than 3/8″. Here’s a closeup of what my seams looked like.

Assembling the Pillow Case

This pillow cover is an envelope-style that has an opening on the back. As a result, it is easy put on and take off of the pillow form for washing.

Prepare a back piece by folding over one long edge about 1/2″ and sew to secure. Repeat on the other back piece. Set aside.

Now let’s make the front.

Gather your 81 squares that are 5″ x 5″. I cut mine out from a pack of 10″ precuts. Then sew nine rows of nine squares each. I like to mix up my fabrics to give it a super scrappy look. Once the nine rows are completed, sew them together to form a large top.

Press the top and prepare to cut it down to 37″ square. Mine measured out to 39″ so I found the difference between 39 and 37 and divided it in half to get the amount I needed to trim off of each side (39″ – 37″ = 2″; 2″ x 1/2 = 1″). In my case I cut 1″ off of each side.

Check both directions of the top to make sure you get a 37″ square for the top.

Sewing the Back and Front of the Pillow

Lay the top on a flat surface with right side facing up. Then line up one of the back pieces on top to one edge with right side facing down. Pin around the outer three edges. Next, line up the second back piece with right sides facing so that the front of the pillow is covered by the two back pieces. Pin around the three edges.

Sew the layers together around the outer edges of the entire square using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Sew around two times for added strength, backstitching where the folded edges are.

Turn the pillow case right sides out and press it. I use a chop stick or pencil eraser to gently push out the edges and corners. Put the pillow form into the case and Voila! You have a great floor pillow.

Our dog Frisco thought he could claim it when I was taking photos! I have to say that he looks pretty cute on it!
